How Was The Sun Formed ?

From other stars, astronomers found that the sun most likely started out as a large collapsing cloud of gas inside some interstellar clout.

The cloud collapsed for millions of years, until it formed a rotating disk with a large central bulge. You know, something like this:

Pretty neat huh? And inside the rotating disk, bits of matter will eventually collide and begin to form our planets. And one of those planets will be Earth!
The central bulge repeatedly collapsing under its own gravity until the temperatures in the core got so high that deuterium atoms (an isotope of hydrogen) began to fuse and give off thermonuclear energy. This caused the continuous collapse to slow down and eventually led the sun to its second stage; where Hydrogen nuclei begin to fuse into Helium. This is what started the sun’s current evolutionary phase.

In fact, our sun will continue to consume the Hydrogen fuel until it runs out. And from there, the sun will expand into a red giant, before collapsing down into a white dwarf.

The reason why the sun won’t turn into a supernova afterwards is due to its mass. Stars that are capable of becoming a supernova have at least 8 to 12 times the mass of our sun. When a star of that magnitude runs out of fuel, its core collapses in a fraction of a second due to its mass. This creates an extremely dense neutron star, which releases a lot of energy.

However, our sun isn’t large enough. So it just simply starts growing in size, before shrinking back down into a white dwarf. But not before consuming the first three or so planets. Fortunately for everyone on Earth, astronomers predict that this won’t happen at least for another five billion years!
